Thanks to my one year heat free challenge I can honestly say that looking after my hair over the past few months has been a breeze. It’s healthier than ever, stronger than ever, and I would do it all over again in a second.
Now it would be quite cheeky of me to say that the entire heat free year was a walk in the park, in fact the first few weeks of going heat free were more like a hike! The more I attempted to wash and go the greater my number of single strands knots. My frustration at the knots got so bad, I found myself making a habit of yanking the knots off during my weekly relaxation session, a.k.a whilst catching up on an episode of Scandal or Homeland!
I obviously was not going to let that last very long. I began to look into ways I could stretch my hair without heat, so that it would be longer and give me more styling options. Fast forward to a year later and some of these methods saved my life! So ladies here are some great ways to go heat free without losing your mind!
Banding is a simple method which allows you to defy shrinkage, by stretching sections of your natural or transitioning hair with a hair band or several hair bands. I found a great vid which shows the method in its glory. I gave this method a try last year in April sometime, I’ll be honest I looked super crazy but it definitely worked. I may just do this again.
As you may know I live for these, especially twist outs [which I find take less time]. Twist outs and braids outs make for the cutest of hairstyles. If done neatly enough they can even be worn as a protective style when you can’t be bothered, or do not need to unravel them. I love this video by Whitney of Naptural85 who shows step by step how she achieves the perfect braid out.
Whilst I am still yet to test these out for myself, Curlformers have proved to be a favourite tool amongst naturals and transitioners. Not only do they help to stretch hair, they also give a head full of beautiful spiralled curls. I officially purchased a set after craving them for so long. I will definitely show you my results, I can’t wait!
Last but not least, let’s take it way back!
Most of us may think of our childhood when we think of threading, I know for one this hairstyle was not a popular one when I was growing up, who would have thought it would make it back into the spotlight! Of all of the methods, threading in my opinion helps to achieve the most stretched out look. However, if you have very long hair this method may not be for you as it requires quite a bit of arm exercise. Check out this great video on exactly how to do it, who knows this may end up as a favourite.
