Is your fear of success sabotaging your dreams?
Finally, you’re ready to take the plunge, the excitement is unexplainable, if this works you’ll live the life you’ve always dreamed of, money will never be an issue, you’ll travel the world, this is all you’ve ever wanted!
But wait, what if it doesn’t work? What if people don’t like it? Can I really afford to do this? What makes this so special anyway?
It’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement of following your dreams or starting your own business, but the truth is so many of us just cannot bring ourselves to do it. Once the excitement mellows down and we put on our planning hats, things we had closed our eyes to become more and more visible. This is going to be a lot of work!
Some of you may know I took the plunge and left my job in Finance in November last year. I had been toying with the idea of being self-employed for over a year and could no longer fight it. Leaving my role was one of the most liberating experiences of my life, but it soon became one I started to regret just months later, when self-employed life was not bearing the fruits I had hoped it would. I kept this to myself of course and decided to start job hunting, so as to have a backup plan and also to satisfy those around me who couldn’t fathom the idea of me being ‘so young’ and unemployed!
It wasn’t until a coffee date with a dear friend and ex-colleague in February, that it dawned on me that deep down I was scared of success, or better yet scared of the work, effort and time that was required of me to really make my business idea successful. We caught up on married life, work and motherhood, and she shared something that would prove to be a huge page turner in my life. ‘The Bullet Journal’. Now I’m not here to tell you that the Bullet Journal is your answer to ‘How To Overcome Your Fear Of Success’, but what I will tell you is that it has taught me three key things. To get real, get organised and get to work. Let me explain…
What if it doesn’t work? Sure, but what if it does!
One of the biggest factors behind unbirthed success stories is doubt. It often creeps up on us and tells us that we are inadequate, unequipped and unable to achieve the things we desire. On the flip side doubt can be an extremely powerful business tool if looked at with different eyes. I like to call this ‘Getting Real’.
TASK: Tackle your doubts head on by writing a list of the doubts you have about your business idea/dreams. Once you have done this, take a different coloured pen [preferably a bright colour], and below this state your positive counter argument
Doubt: What if people don’t like my idea?
Counter argument: What’s not to like? You are doing this to inspire people, even hubby thinks it’s a great idea, that’s worth something!
Doubt: What if I can’t afford it?
Counter argument: How much exactly do I need to get started? [I’ll put together a business plan], Can I sell things I don’t need? [ Research Ebay/Depop/Etsy], Can I get a loan? [Research and discuss with financial adviser], Perhaps I can get a part-time job?
Doubt: What if it takes too long to succeed?
Counter argument: How do I define success? Good things take time, be PATIENT!
In my case facing my doubts head on with this exercise led to so many new discoveries, if you’re able to get through this task without feeling absolutely defeated then there’s hope, you’ve got something worth fighting for!
This is where the Bullet Journal and Miracle Morning have changed the game for me!
One of the things I didn’t do before leaving my job was to put together a solid business plan. This didn’t mean a perfect plan, it just meant writing things down on paper as opposed to unorganised notes on my phone. There are many business plan templates on the internet which can help you develop a more solid foundation for you business idea/passion
Are you selling a service or a product?
Who is your target audience?
What is your income/expenditure?
In my case putting together a business plan with my Bullet Journal [check out my Pinterest board here], introduced me to the Miracle Morning routine. I’m already seeing the positive results becoming more organised is having on my life, and let me tell you it’s unbelievably worth it!
I’ll admit this has been one the biggest lessons for me and here is one of the quotes that keeps me in check, ‘Dreams don’t work unless you do’. That’s right, if you’re reading this and hoping to start up your own business or do something your are very passionate about, you’ll probably have to work just as hard if not harder than the average working person. On a normal day when I worked in Finance I would be up and in the shower at 6:00 am, ready to catch my bus to the station at 6:43 am. That changed when I left work, it was 8:30 am starts for me and that was if I went to bed on time. This changed again when I started the Miracle Morning routine. If you caught my ‘Morning Motivation | How Waking Up Earlier Can Change Your Life’ post, you’ll know I’m now up at 7:00 am and I get a whole lot done between 7:00 am and 8:30am before my ‘self-employed’ work day really begins. I believe if you are not tired by the end of the day you’re probably not working hard enough. Push harder for your passions and the results will slowly but surely come through.
If you’ve made it this far into this post I want to encourage you to keep fighting for your dreams. Anything that gets you this excited deserves your efforts. Be sure to surround yourself with people who can support and encourage you along the way, and be honest with them about your plans. Last but not least remember to take some time out for you, one day a week or a few minutes in the day to pamper yourself, de-stress, spend time with loved ones, watch a movie, simply just relax. You deserve this for all of the hard work you’re putting in!
